#2 Morse taper mount for Delta, Jet, PSI, and other Midi lathe headstocks and tailstocks. A 1/2-Inch diameter 3-jaw mechanism can be used for securing small turnings or pen mandrels at the headstock, or a drill bit in the tailstock. Accepts a 1/4-20" draw bolt (not supplied) for safety. Will hold drill bits up to 1/2-Inch in diameter. Drill chuck mounted in the #2 MT can be used in either the headstock or tailstock. Tightens with a chuck key(included) for excellent grip. First lathe I've owned, I have been very happy so far. It is a lot quieter than I thought it would be, and runs smooth. I have only used it to turn pens. Originally I was concerned about changing the belt for the variable speed, I have yet to attempt to change it from the highest setting. I drill my blanks on it as well, so far have had no trouble at the lowest speed of the high setting (I believe it is 600 rpm). I would recommend this to anyone who wants to turn pens or small projects, and get a quality lathe at a reasonable price.

I'm getting ready to set this up for for the sole purpose of making cylinders with a router running across rails above the lathe. (I make children's blocks for a living.)

Just a word of caution:

1. The instruction manual does not include any mention of connecting the two parts of the lathe (but otherwise the manual is pretty useful).

By looking at the motor mount, I guessed that the proper order is Bolt > Black Spring Washer > Steel Washer > Lathe Parts > Steel Washer > Nut.

2. Because of the plates attaching the two halves of the lathe, there is a zone where you cannot anchor the sliding live stop. This means that you cannot work on anything that measures 17 inches to 19.5 inches (unless you mount or glue it to an extra block of wood).

3. The unit arrives with the belt on the slowest speed (which is where most people would start to rough out a piece), but the motor is mounted loose, so you'll need to loosen the two bolts to let the motor slide down a little to increase the tension. Remember, you need to make sure that the belt defects to hand pressure about 1/2 of an inch, per the manual. Then, in order to change the speed, you have to open the box and unbolt the motor to lift it up to move the belt. For most woodworkers, this would be a nuisance, but it's not too much more work than other manual speed changing lathes I've used.

Jet Lathe Wood Chisel Turning Set

I have owned two sets of these tools because they are cheap, the right size for my applications, and I can grind them for special applications. However, they are not tempered well. I have had one shatter when it fell on the concrete floor and another snap while turning - quite a sensation! Anyhow, know what you are getting. You can get the same tools as Jet Mini-lathe tools, made by Crown, for about $80 - much nicer steel.
